The Wonder of Winter in Kentucky
By ELEANOR MARTIN
It's early morning and I hear someone calling, "Where are my boots?"
"They're in a box on the first step going to the attic right where you left them. Button up your overcoat!"
As I pull the curtain back I am afraid to breathe deeply for fear the beauty of this winter wonderland might disappear.
My kingdom for a working fireplace. I have one, it was built for beauty and not service. The landscape is white with snow as if someone rolled out a white carpet.
Each season has its own beauty. It seems only yesterday since I read this poem from Country by Hilda Sanderson:
"Go wading in the forest
When its floor is golden laid,
Sailing though the glade.
Look up and see an autumn sky
Above a harvest sea,
Of leaves that fall like colored rain
that patters playfully."
I think any traveler entering the Bluegrass State, his first impression would be, you have a great state here, and so we do. We still think of it as southern- although it felt like the Siberian Express had passed through.
When the temperature hits around zero and the wind chill is high it makes me wish I had taken the warning of the Canadian geese flying south in early November.
I was just getting use to the bare trees that shed their leaves, standing like sentinels with their branches outstretched as if to shelter the countryside, their limbs laced with snow.
I'm not an artist but I'd get out my paintbrush now! The tranquility of this winter scene seems to enfold you with peace and quite.
The Louisville Gas and Electric Company in sending out their bills for utilities each month, always enclose a little booklet on household hints, with a favorite recipe. Now that you are inside looking out, it might be, a good time to try one of them.
Impossible Pie
4 eggs
½ stick butter
1 3/4 cup sugar
½ Cup self-rising flour
2 cups of milk
1 (4 oz.) can shredded coconut
No crust is required; this recipe makes its own. Beat eggs well. Add melted butter, sugar, flour and milk. Beat again until blended well. Stir in coconut. Pour into 2 ungreased 8-inch pie pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Cool.
One more wish I'd like to make before this New Year, it is that you will feel closer to your family, to others and to God.
