Notes
Regarding Letters to Adalisa Louisa Hardaway ScottFrom Margaret Witt
o Dick was Dick Madison, the son of a neighbor. "Old Man Dick" must have
been some kind of a joke?
These notes are based on an interview with Minnie Alice Bondurant Scott on 29 August
1998.
o John Williams who lived on the north side of Stith Valley Road was Ky State
Representative and then State Senator. Some of the political references are to John.
o Fletcher Mercer Scott stayed near the home place longer than the other children. That may be why Harold refers to him as "Pap" and "Pa". He first married Mayte Jones and lived in the house at the foot of the hill where Adalisa Louisa and Harold both spent their latter years. He and Mayte build a house on New Highway 60 in about (1950?). Mayte died during the move to the new house. Fletcher second married Belle Wallice from Irvington.
o Sep 10, 1913: Cousin Albert and cousin Olive Jeffers lived in Franklin County Ky. near Frankfort.
o Dec 11, 1913: The new niece is Jessie Virginia Scott (Williams)
o Dec 28, 1915: Ike is Ike Hicks who lived on the north side of Stith Valley
bordering John Williams's farm to the west.
- Erie was Ike's sister
o Oct 23, 1923: King Powell refers to Mr. Lloyd H. Powell, school superintendent
of Meade County schools for 25 years. He pursued a number of reforms that resulted
in the county school system in Meade County today (1998). Everyone did not always
agree with the consolidation and other changes that he pursued. He was and uncle of
Minnie Alice Bondurant Scott.
- The County Organ probably refers to the Meade County Messenger
o Oct. 28, 1925: Uncle John Witt worked for the State Highway Department which
took him to Meade County at times. The family would stay at Granny Scott's
house. Consequently the letter addressed to Mrs. J. L. Witt, Guston, Ky.
- Aunt Lilly was wife of Alex Scott
- Uncle Jesse was Jesse Hardaway
- Lizzy was probably wife of Alex Willis
- Lilly Wright was Cousin Gill Wright's first wife
- Aunt Mag is Granny Scott's sister (Hardaway)
- Mack was Granny's good buggy horse
o Jan 29, 1929: Mr. Hicks is probably Ike Hicks mentioned above. There was well drilling for gas in Meade County about that time.
o Oct 1933: Mary F. is Mary Fontaine Scott (married Foote)
o April 21, 1938: Sweet cakes refer to cookies. This is an old Scottish usage.
o April 27, 1938: Little Lotus Bud is Dottie (Dorothy Scott, daughter of Fletcher and Mayte Scott)
o Aug 4, 1938: Happy refers to Happy Chandler, longtime governor of Kentucky
o Nov 26, 1941: Pa is Fletcher Scott. Fletcher was elected magistrate for that section of Meade County including Stith Valley. The magistrate had quite a bit of influence over road maintenance. Hence the reference to every pig path being rocked.
o May 4, 1942: Gid is Gid Ammons who lived for a time in the old house built for Grandma Margaret Hardaway after it was moved over near the woods. See Walter Scott's book.
o Dec 3, 1942: Sargt. Stanley refers to Mary Ladd's husband Stanley Haberlin.
- Bud would have been Winfield's son.
o Don't know who Dick was. It must have been a kid, even though Harold refers to
him some as "Old Man Dick"
