leather case for the gun. Miss. Mary said it was a mighty fine gun. She shot her first bird with the gun.

She began smoking a pipe at the age of five when she would light her grandmother’s pipe. She washed her clothing on
a washboard and remembers well the civil war. She said soldiers or guerrillas would ride up to her home and take what
food or horses were left. Her parents would bury the food to keep them from finding it. She said smoking and
worrying is what leads to an early grave. She did neither.
