                                                                             STITH

In the summer of 1924 while visiting in Kentucky, I, Frances S. Fast, visited my Aunt, Mrs. Thomas J. Stith, (my mother’s oldest sister, formerly Hannah Williams) who showed me two old Bibles from which I copied the following records.  In William and Mary Quarterly, Second Series, Vol. 6, No. 2, April 1926, printed at Williamsburg, Virginia may be found the record which I sent to them. The Bible was dated 1828, New York; published by N. Bangs and J. Emory; Azor Hoyt, printer.

He came from Campbell County, Virginia, in 1806; purchased 430 acres in the Barrens from Thomas Lewis in 1811, part of Banks and Claiborne Survey, and named his location Stith Valley.

Richard Stith made an arithmetic book, which is owned by Mrs. Eula Hart, on heavy paper, and bound in linen cloth, beautifully ruled and handwriting very plain and perfect figures. In an old note book, leather bound, he had written 1828, April 4th end 5 days snow 1829, April a blustring day of hale and rain. 11th
The 25th and 26th large white frost. Oct. 29th 1830 paid Ben Hardin $75. The 14 Jan’y 1831 snowed all day.

PARENTAGE OF LUCY HALL

(73) Lucy Hall, b July 1736 :d Feb. 12, 1815 :m Dec. 28, 1756
Richard (72) Stith, Was a daughter of John Hall and His
        wife, Ann Bolling.

Robert Bolling of Prince George County, Va. to John Hall 1197
acres of land consideration "love and affection to my son-in-law"
Jan. 23, 1746, the first deed having been made Aug. 13, 1740.
Deed Book 1, page 247.

Archives of the Virginia State Library Records of the
Bolling family 1747 - 1843, yield some information.
The records of Amelia Co. Va. show that John Hall gave power
of attorney to Stith Bolling to make a final settlement of the
legacy devised by Robert Bolling in his will, dated January 23, 1747
to his daughter, Anne Bolling Hall.

On March 20, 1762 John Hall, Gentleman, of Amelia Co. gives one
negro man to John Hall, Jr., his son. This seems to be the last
recorded date of a residence of John Hall in Amelia Co.

Amelia County was formed from Prince George in 1735.

On March 13, 1764 John Hall appointed John Hall his lawful attorney and again on February 18, 1765 John Hall of Edgecomb County in the Province of North Carolina, Gentlemen, gives full power to his son, John Hall the younger of Amelia County in the Colony of Virginia.

It is evident from the records of 1761 that John Hall was preparing to go to North Carolina, but we do not know the reason for his taking up residence there.

(146) John Hall and Anne Bolling had issue of record:

(73) Lucy Hall b July 1736, married Dec. 29, 1758 Richard Stith

Others mentioned William Hall, several times as a witness. He seems to be a son, also. Deed Book 8, p 628 Amelia County.

NOTE: A list of slaves’ births written by Richard Stith, in the small notebook, which at the moment is in my hands, shows "CIB’S CHILDREN" the first, Betty, born Nov. 17, 1762. Without actual proof, this seems to be the slave named in the above indenture "CEBRINS")

                                                                        THOMAS JONES

According to the Bible records we know that the father of Elizabeth Jones, who married Richard Stith, Nancy Jones, who married William Stith, Rhoda Jones, who married Thomas Stith, was Thomas Jones, their mother named Elizabeth _______.

In one record the title Major Thomas Jones is given to him. The sister of Richard, William, and Thomas Stith, Catherine Stith, married James Jones, Sept. 17, 1791. This James Jones was not a brother to Elizabeth, Rhoda and Nancy. His parents were Cl. Wm. Jones and Agnes Walker. (Virginia Hist. Mag. Vol. 36, p 259)

But we know almost for a certainty that Elizabeth, Nancy and Rhoda had a brother, James Jones. In his will Thomas Stith directs that "my son, Thomas, is to be educated as a physician at the expense of my estate and if he should return from Virginia, not having opportunity to study with his Uncle James he must have an inheritance with his brethern" --- Since Thomas Stith, himself, had no brother James it falls that he must be the brother of Rhoda to be an uncle. (How nice it would have been if Thomas had troubled to name "his uncle James ___ rather than to leave it to deduction.)

In Campbell County Chronicles there is a quote from a letter to Major Thomas Jones from Hampden-Sidney College "-your sons, James and Buckner have completed their course - James with honors - Sept. 27, 1809. Thomas Jones is listed as the father of Martha Jones, who married John Wood, 1814; Dolly Jones married James Glass in 1803; Dorcus Jones married Achilles Moorman in 1798. So we begin to arrive at the list of children of Thomas Jones and his wife, Elizabeth ____. From another source registering for a land patent Thomas Jones is listed as Thomas B. Jones, 1791.
